The green deal will help bring about wall insulation improvements to homes and businesses that qualify for a loan under the grant scheme. Installation of cavity wall insulation will provide better heat loss characteristics than walls which have no cavity fill.
Government Advisers
Many existing homes when they were first built have a gap between walls known as a “cavity”, this is an air gap between the inner and outer walls. It is a popular construction method used for houses from about the 1950’s. To determine if an existing dwelling is suitable for free cavity wall insulation an advisor will carry out a survey to see if the installation of insulation is feasible. Manufacturers supply insulating materials in different types, and some now produce them from renewable, sustainable sources.
Types of Wall Insulation
Mineral Wool, is the most popular choice, it consists of glass fibre, rock or recycled materials, also known as ‘wool’.
Wall Insulation Beads
Cavity fill Expanded Polystyrene Beads can be “blown” into cavity walls, the material is mixed with a binder that binds the beads together and then injected into the wall through a drill hole.
Foam Insulation
UF (Urea Formaldehyde) Foam, this is injected into the air cavity, the product is water based and injected under slight pressure it sets quickly after injection. Any retained water in the foam will evaporate over time through the external walls of the house or building.
Green Deal advisors can only use accredited and approved cavity wall contractors to undertake the work. This is a condition of the home improvement grant. It is expected that the installer will already be registered under CIGA and has a CIGA certificate.
You may also qualify for loft insulation, or a top up, to meet the current building regulations standards. The advisor should be able to give you advice at the time when the surveyor carries out an inspection of the property.
